Life stories lifegroup idea lo
Life Stories

Talking with Suzy Jones…

GREG: So Suzy, tell us about the recent series of sessions you’ve done with your lifegroup?

SUZY: We’ve done something we’ve ended up calling Life Stories.  Our group came out of an online Alpha course, we just kept meeting, did the Bible course together and now still meet online.  It was a case of getting to know each other better, sharing our stories, not restricted to ‘testimony’ but we started most of these by saying ‘So tell us your story’.

G: A whole lifegroup session on one person’s life story?  I can imagine that was scary for some, how did it go down with people?

S: It wasn’t a ‘spot light’ thing, it was just giving people a chance to share.  I just approached people privately to sound them out.  It was so nice to give each person the floor, whether they were quiet and outspoken, and people came ready to listen.  Everyone was happy to share, some lasted 15 minutes and people would ask questions and if things were breezed over, people showed interest and asked for more of the story.  Some people’s stories took a lot longer, but it was always an evening worth of conversation and prayer.

G: Yea so apart from the life stories what else occurred in the meetings?  How did prayer feature?

S: We’d ask the person speaking to pray for the group when they had finished and we then asked someone from the group to finish by praying for the story teller.  People would often share important scriptures that we’d look at together or specific songs that meant a lot to them, we’d share them on whatsapp so we could go away and listen to them…then inevitably other peoples stories would come out relating to those songs and that would spark more conversation, it was lovely.

G: So would you recommend others trying this ‘series’ in their lifegroups?  How did it help your group?

S: I can see it has developed a closeness in the group – it’s helped us pray for each other in deeper ways and brought more understanding of each other’s situations, it just helps build a stronger connection.  Definitely recommended, why would you not want to get to know each other more?!

G: Thank you Suzy for sharing this idea with us – would you be happy to advise people and answer questions about how it worked for you?

S: No worries, yea sure, happy to share our group’s experience with anyone, come and speak to me after church.
